Acreage: Corn Down 4%, Soybeans Up 11%, Cotton Up 9%

U.S. farmers planted 91.6 million acres of corn for 2014 – the lowest planted acreage since 2010 but the fifth largest since 1944.  Soybean planted acreage has reached a record high of 84.8 million acres – up 11% from 2013.  The area for harvest is 84.1 million acres – also up 11% over last year and will also be a record high – breaking past records by 7.4 million acres.  Minnesota, Michigan, Nebraska, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, and Wisconsin will all have record soybean acreage.  Overall wheat acreage will be just 1% above 2013 at 56.5 million acres.  Winter wheat acreage for 2014 is down 2% from last year at 42.3 million acres. Total hard red wheat totals 30.4 million acres, soft red wheat totals 8.5 million acres, and white winter wheat totals 3.41 million acres.  Other spring wheat acreage for 2014 is 10% above 2013 levels. Overall cotton acreage is 9% above last year at 11.4 million acres.
