Agriterra Ltd’s subsidiary Tropical Farms Ltd. has completed the acquisition of a 50 year lease with a 21 year extension option on a previously producing 1,208 hectare cocoa and coffee plantation in south east Sierra Leone. An additional 546 hectares located north of the plantation have also been acquired on the same terms. The plantation will be redeveloped to continue in the production of cocoa, coffee and other cash crops. A 1.7 hectare fully irrigated nursery is being installed which will be the largest and most technically advanced cocoa production facility in Sierra Leone capable of producing 500 hectares worth of seedlings. The nursery currently contains 250,000 seedlings in the germination process which will be used to plant a 200 hectare area in the process of being cleared. In line with the Board’s goal to rapidly expand the company’s cocoa plantation business, Tropical Farms is negotiating to secure an additional 1,200 hectares contiguous to the north of the plantation and 800 hectares to the south. The negotiations for both are expected to be completed in the near term. After receiving an initial US$28 million from the sale of its legacy oil asset, the company is looking to complete additional acquisitions of land to further build shareholder value.
