As the Argentinian wheat harvest is about complete, the yield will be even lower than estimated. Originally 10.5 million tons of wheat were expected, however the final harvest will likely be 10.1 million tons. Early season rains promoted fungus growth, washed out roads and mired equipment. Following the rains several heat shocks hit and then hail and strong winds during harvest. Growers planted 3.5 million hectares of wheat – 25% less than 2011/12 season to skirt the curbs the government placed on the exportation of wheat. The Buenos Aires Grain Exchange estimates an even lower wheat yield at 9.8 million tons – 30% lower than last season.
