Syngenta has developed a new hybrid corn called Enogen which is genetically engineered to boost ethanol production and sells at a premium price of 40 cents per bushel above market price to local ethanol plants. The hybrid contains a gene that promotes an enzyme that accelerates the breakdown of starch into sugar, and allows ethanol producers that grind corn to forgo buying the enzyme called alpha amylase in liquid form. Enogen is the first hybrid designed especially for ethanol production and offers producers the opportunity to improve their efficiency. A 100 million gallon plant using Enogen corn could save 400,000 gallons of water, 1.3 million KWh of electricity, and 2.44 billion BTUs of natural gas while reducing carbon emissions by 106 million pounds.
