India Positioning Itself as a Major Player in the Wheat Market

India Positioning Itself as a Major Player in the Wheat Market

 

Traditionally dominant wheat exporters are the U.S., Canada, Australia, Argentina, the EU, and as of ten years ago, the Black Sea Region. With a forecasted production of 90 million tons of wheat this year, and prices as much as $40 lower per ton than Australian wheat, India is moving to become a major player in the global wheat sector.  The one variable holding back Indian wheat somewhat is quality consistency from one shipment to the next.  Originally bought to be used as animal feed, the general quality of Indian wheat has improved to a point that now countries are buying it to mix with higher quality wheat from countries other than India for human consumption.  Mills in Southeast Asia are increasingly turning to less expensive India wheat. If quality control and consistency can be harnessed in India, the country could be a very real competitor to Australian wheat.
