After three straight slumping harvests the U.S. is ceding market share to Brazil where corn production doubled since 2005. In the year ending September 30th, Brazil will double corn shipments to 24.5 million tons while U.S. corn exports tumble 38% to 24 million tons – the lowest amount since 1972 according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) report on February 8th. This will be the first time the U.S. is not the world’s leading corn exporter since 1960. Brazil is the world’s largest grower of sugar, coffee and oranges and the USDA is predicting that Brazil will displace the U.S. this year as the top exporter of soybeans.
