Japan’s Sojitz Corp. said it will import soybeans from Ukraine for the first time in an effort to secure non-GM soybeans. Sojitz will deliver a trial “few hundred” metric tons in 2013 and will expand to 5,000 tons within three years. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) 93% of the total U.S. soybean crop was GM in 2012 and supply from the U.S. and Canada make up 92% of Japan’s imports in 2011. Japan used more than 950,000 tons of soybeans last year for foods such as tofu, miso soup paste and natto, a stringy bean eaten for breakfast. Of that, 80% of the demand was met by imports.
