According to AgRural, Brazil’s 2013-14 soybean crop is expected to see an increase of 9% over the 2012-13 crop. 2012-13 saw a harvest of 81.46 million tons, and given normal weather conditions the 2013-14 crop is expected to reach 89.1 million tons. (The latest estimate from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) stands at 85 million tons.) Area planted in soybeans is expected to increase 6% to 29.5 million hectares according to early indicators for next season. The state of Mato Grosso, which has large reserves of degraded pasture being converted into farmland, will see an increase of area planted in soybeans of 592,000 hectares – the largest increase in the country.
