Brief: Japan International Cooperation Agency to Fund Rs 1,787 cr (US$200 million) Irrigation Project in Odisha

The Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has agreed to provide the state government of Odisha in India, with an additional Rs 1,787 cr (US$200 million) to complete the second phase of construction on the Rengali Left Bank Canal.

Once completed, the 71.31 kilometer long canal will bring irrigation to 39,416 hectares of agricultural land according to state officials.

Of the total 39,416 hectares of farmland, 5,788 hectares will be along the Bhuban branch canal system, 8,110 hectares will be along the Sukinda canal system, 6,640 hectares will be on the Barapada canal system, 13,195 hectares will be on the Korei canal system, and an additional 5,633 hectares will be irrigated upon the full completion of the project.
