In 2014 chicken is set to account for a full half of the meat that the population of Britain consumes – up from just above one third 20 years ago. Britain consumes 2.2 million chickens per day with 70% of those birds produced in the UK. The industry needs to expand in order to meet demand for domestically produced poultry however planning decisions that should take 13 weeks are taking a year and a half and the poultry sector is seeing the lowest rate of increase (30.9%) across 35 different food categories in the past two decades.
