A U.S.-Canada task force documented the commercial flow of grain from the U.S. into Canada to be used as input for the development of phytosanitary measures under Canada’s future Grain Import Framework. According to the study between the years 2010-2012 approximately 1.5 million metric tons of corn moved from the U.S. to Canada per year. Yearly average soybean exports from the U.S. to Canada were 245,000 metric tons and wheat exports were 69,000 tons. 54% of all U.S. grain exports to Canada were transported by truck, 32% by rail, and 14% by barge. If in the future Canada’s new framework requires inspections and certificates for each shipment, the high percentage of grain transported by truck would prove problematic. The study provides the industry with a picture of the volume of vehicles and rail cars involved at the border.
