According to IBIS World China’s poultry industry is expected to produce 20 million tons of chicken in 2013 and will see a growth in revenue of almost 10% – higher than the five year annual average growth of 7.7%. As China’s 1.3 billion people demand more meat it is expected that within the next five years the industry will reach an integrated maturation with revenues of $105.8 billion. Tyson is currently processing approximately 1.3 million birds per week with a goal of reaching 3 million birds per week by the end of 2014 when it plans to achieve full integration of its plants in China. Cargill has developed one of the largest integrated chicken facilities in China with a feed mill, farms, hatchery and processing plant. Within the next few years as the plant reaches full production Cargill will raise 65 million birds per year. Both Tyson and Cargill are entering the growing Chinese poultry sector at a time when their reputations for safety and quality control will gain them consumer confidence and when quick service restaurants are opening at a rate of more than one per day.
