China Poised to Challenge Europe in Wine Exports, Says Research

A recent report from market researcher just-drinks.com states that China is currently a top-ten global wine producers and consumer despite its current exports of only around 100,000 hectoliters.  Currently the country’s increasing domestic consumption places China as a valuable global export market.  Wine consumption in China has grown by 57% over the past ten years to reach 17.8 billion hectoliters in 2012.  However in the future as production increases and meets domestic demand, Chinese wine exports could pose a serious challenge to Western European wine exports on the global market.  In 1995 France, Italy, and Spain combined accounted for approximately 52% of global wine supply.  By 2005 this figure had fallen to 50%, and today it has fallen to 44%.
