Kimberly Agricultural Investments (KAI) which is currently developing the 13,400 hectare Ord Irrigation Scheme in Western Australia has purchased the Kununurra sugar mill from Cambridge Gulf Ltd. which has owned the mill for three years. In 2012 the Australian government agreed that KAI would be the primary developer to establish a sugar industry in the Ord region however this particular mill will likely be used to produce ethanol from sorghum. KAI has stated that commercial sugar production would not be operational for another 10 years or longer and until that time other crops will be grown. In the future another sugar mill will likely be constructed in the region when the need arises. The purchase price was not disclosed.
