Dairy Scare Gives Opening To India

India the world’s biggest dairy producer hopes to gain market share in China and other emerging Asian markets after a dairy contamination scare has recently affected New Zealand’s Fonterra when 38 tons of whey concentrate may have been contaminated with a bacterium that causes botulism.  India’s milk production is likely to increase 5% in the year to next March to 133 million tons.  Traditionally most of that production is kept domestically, however with domestic demand at 128 million tons there will be milk available to make skimmed milk powder for export.  India expects its skimmed milk powder exports to jump by more than half to 100,000 tons this year after the Indian government lifted an export ban in June 2012.
