Dr. Jeremy Galbreath conducted a study sponsored by Wines of Western Australia in which he surveyed 532 wine companies in Victoria, South Australia, and West Australia about their knowledge of climate change and the measures they were taking, if any, to mitigate its effects upon their industry. Seventy five percent responded that they were employing water conserving techniques, while more than half responded that they were implementing measures to reduce the use of agrichemicals. Other actions being taken include the use of alternative energy sources, alternative packaging, reducing refrigeration loads, planting extra trees to be used as carbon sinks, switching to hotter climate varieties of grapes, and the use of canopy management techniques that address increases in temperature.
