As part of its plan to expand its presence in Africa, French yogurt company Danone SA has acquired a 40% stake in Brookside Dairy Ltd., the largest milk collector in East Africa. Over the past two years Danone has invested over US$1.35 billion in Africa buying a 49% stake in Fan Milk International, the largest frozen dairy product producer in West Africa, and a controlling stake in Morocco’s Central Laitière. Brookside sells long-life milk in Kenya where it has a 40% market share, as well as to neighboring countries such as Tanzania and Uganda. Danone sells fresh dairy products across the African continent from Morocco to South Africa with revenues of approximately €1.5 billion. The financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
