Arla Foods has announced a $397 million investment plan to upgrade ten of its dairy sites and to reduce the company’s CO2 emissions. Arla recognizes that its sales to growth markets outside of the EU are rapidly growing and the company plans to double its exports to these markets by 2017. To achieve this goal the company is investing DKK750 million (US$136 million) to increase production for export to Russia, China, the Middle East, and Africa. DKK530 million (US$96.1 million) will be invested in the construction of a new facility in Denmark to produce lactose to be used in child nutrition products, DKK126 million (US$22.85 million) will be invested in its Pronsfeld dairy in Germany, DKK95 million (US$17.2 million) is to be used to expand production of quark (a type of curd cheese) in Upahl, and DKK81 million (US$14.7 million) is to build a cheese packaging facility in the UK. In addition to these investments Arla announced it will spend DKK125 million (US$22.67 million) to reduce its energy consumption and reduce its overall CO2 emissions by 25%.
