Because of India’s changing demographics and exploding population (which will surpass the population of China by 2030) soy oil consumption has increased 590% and soy meal consumption has increased 709% since 1990. As incomes increase so does urban living and demand for more meat protein in the diet. As a result Indian animal agriculture sectors have seen significant growth, especially the poultry sector. Even though soybean production has grown by 537% since 1990 it is not keeping up with overall demand for soy. The U.S. check-off has been working to increase the amount of U.S. soy in food products, animal feed and in the aquaculture sector in India and states that India could be importing soy in 5-7 years.
