A consortium of farm groups and agricultural data technology companies have published agreed-upon privacy and security principals. The non-binding principals are meant to reassure farmers that the data they provide to data tech companies will not be misused or manipulated if it ends up in the hands of traders or land brokers, and are meant to help data companies form guidelines that will assist in the formation of contracts and in the development of marketing tools. The principals were formed through meetings organized by the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) in association with the American Soybean Association, National Corn Growers Association, John Deere, DuPont Pioneer, and Monsanto’s Climate Corporation. Although the principals align with formerly published policies of many data technology companies, the inclusion of the AFBF and farm groups could help reassure farmers, making them more comfortable with integrating these new technologies into their operations.
