The French Polynesian government in Tahiti has signed an investment agreement with Chinese aquaculture company Tian Rui International Investment to establish a vast aquaculture project on the atoll of Makemo which will be worth US$1.7 billion over 15 years. Tian Rui will be given 36 hectares for a period of 30 years at which point the term can be renewed. A local company will be created to oversee and develop the project which will begin in June 2014 with the construction of a quay to accommodate the vessels which will be shipping in the construction materials for the aquaculture facilities to be built.
