Harper Government Proposes Change to Support Agricultural Sector Growth Through Modernization

The Canadian government has introduced The Agricultural Growth Act that will stimulate investment and innovation in Canada’s agricultural sector.  The Act is intended to give farmers access to new crop varieties, enhance trade opportunities, increase agricultural product safety, and reduce red tape in order to help Canada to remain competitive in world markets.  Among the key changes included in the bill are:

· Amendments to the Plant Breeder’s Rights Act including allowing farmers to use seeds from the crops     they grow

· Granting the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) the authority to consider foreign reviews, data, and analyses during the approval and regulation of Canadian agricultural products

·  A new licensing and regulation regime for animal feed and fertilizer operations include stronger controls for agricultural products at the border and more stringent record keeping.
