Rare shipments of corn from Argentina are arriving in the U.S. after the U.S. lost one third of its corn production in 2012 as a result of drought conditions. And in a domino effect, Mexico, which usually buys 90% of its corn from the U.S. is also purchasing shipments of corn from Argentina because of a lack of supply to the north. The bulk of Argentina’s corn will be harvested in April and the country expects a harvest of 25.7 million tons compared with a 2011/12 drought-stricken harvest of 21.2 million tons.
