Indonesia will not be meeting its ambitious goal to be self-sufficient in soybeans or sugar by 2014 because of a shortage of available convertible land according to its agricultural minister. The country would need to nearly double it current acreage in soybeans of 600,000 hectares to become self-sufficient and it would require more than 350,000 hectares of extra sugarcane farmland to meet its objective for sugar. Currently there are 450,000 hectares of sugar cultivated. Soybean imports will likely increase 3% this year to meet domestic demand from its growing population.
