India ranks second in the world for fish production, including being ranked second globally for inland capture and aquaculture, and seventh in the world in marine capture production/fisheries. Over the past ten years India’s aquaculture sector posted a growth of 92.8% and the country’s marine capture sector posted a 15.1% increase. Today, India’s share of the global aquaculture market is 6.3% producing a total of 9.51 million tons. Human per capita consumption of fish (17.1 kilograms per person) accounts for 80% of global fish production and is expected to rise by the year 2030. To meet this need India is currently finalizing guidelines for mariculture in cages and cage culture in open bodies of water such as reservoirs to tap into India’s inland aquaculture sector.
