The Japanese government’s growth strategy aims for the country to double its agricultural exports, primarily beef, fruit and vegetables to USD10.3 billion by 2020. Toward this goal, the government plans to subsidize the construction of facilities that meet Muslim halal requirement by up to half. Japan plans to increase beef exports to USD260 million from USD53 million in 2012, and expand fruit exports to USD 260 million from USD82 million in 2012 by 2020. To meet these goals the country is planning to produce foods that meet the religious requirements of Muslim-majority countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, and Saudi Arabia.
