Japans Nitori Holdings Co. is investing US$550 million in large-scale cotton production and related industries in Tanzania. The company is in the final stages of securing 40,000 hectares for its commercial operations in the Handeni District in Tanzania where it will establish a cotton farm and processing plant. The firm will also establish out-grower schemes with surrounding cotton farmers to secure the extra cotton needed to meet the company’s input demand. The firm will then go on to construct textile factories within the region. When Tanzania’s President Kikwete visited Japan in June 2013, Nitori Holdings announced it would invest US$100 million in agricultural production in Tanzania to boost earnings from exports.
