Fonterra announced it is recalling two batches of milk powder in response to a Sri Lankan government order because of claims it is contaminated with traces of the chemical Dicyandiamide (DCD) – a chemical added to pastures to increase agricultural yields. Fonterra denies any contamination has occurred and claims that the tests that the Sri Lankan government used were flawed and incorrect however the company is complying with the order. This recall is not connected with the recall earlier this month of Fonterra milk powder potentially contaminated with a bacterium that can cause botulism. The Sri Lankan government has placed a ban on Fonterra advertising until August 21st when further testing will be completed.
