Amid angry consumer protests about food safety and the recent botulism contamination scare, Fonterra has announced it is temporarily pulling its milk products in Sri Lanka due to the “unstable situation” and closing its processing plant in Biyagama as well as its head office to protect its employees. Fonterra and Sri Lankan officials have been in discussions over the past few weeks concerning the safety of Fonterra’s dairy products and states that the company is working with both the governments of New Zealand and Sri Lanka to continue to supply the Sri Lankan market in the long term. Sri Lanka imports $260 million worth of dairy products from New Zealand annually.
