Russia Lifts Ban on U.S. Pork Imports but Imposes Further Measures

Russia has lifted its official ban on U.S. pork effective March 10th to try to compensate for losses on the domestic market however additional restrictions being imposed will mean that U.S. pork exports to Russia will likely not resume by that date. Russia has stated that regulations needed to be stricter as they only applied to producers and not cold storage exporters making it unclear which businesses are eligible to export.  Some experts state that the additional measures being imposed by Russia are in response to the political tension growing between the two countries since Russia’s movement into the Crimea region of Ukraine.  Work is currently being undertaken to establish exactly which businesses and exporters are able to ship to Russia.
