UK Wheat Sowing Bigger than Thought, says Origin

Winter wheat sowing in the UK for this year’s harvest increased23% to approximately 2 million hectares reflecting the poor sowing conditions in 2012, the second wettest year on record.  In comparison, winter rapeseed sowing fell 15% to 640,000 hectares.  The decline is being attributed to unusual weather encountered last year.  Rapeseed prices in the UK have been strong at £320 per tons since the end of January due in part to weather disrupting transportation in Canada, the world’s biggest exporter, and a rise in vegetable oil prices because of dryness in Indonesia and Malaysia.
