The newest figures show that 4.6 million hectares in Australia are now owned by overseas interests. Australian Senators believe that if stricter measures are not set, Australia will lose control of its agricultural productivity. Currently almost 10% of Australia’s cultivated land or 0.6% of its total landmass is foreign-owned, putting Australia in the top 10 countries when it comes to foreign ownership of agricultural land. Senators are also calling upon the Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB) and its new chairman to redefine the regulations concerning foreign investment.
