Small Agriculture Shows Growth

 

Things have been quite dynamic for smaller agriculture companies lately.  Florida-based Alico owns 130,400 acres (230 square miles) in Hendry County.  The company grows sugarcane, oranges for juice, raises beef cattle, leases land, and has small sand and rock mining operations. Shares have gone up 90% in the past year, but half of that gain occurred this week after their majority shareholder Atlantic Blue Group expressed their interest in selling their entire stake in the company and suggested that Alico join and sell the entire company.  Other small companies of note are PICO Holdings, which has land, water and canola oil processing holdings, and Argentina-based Cresud which have both gone up 9% in the past month, and Limoneira, the largest avocado and one of the largest lemon growers in the U.S. which has gone up 17%.
