Although the International Organization of Vine and Wine rankings are not released yet, figures indicate that Spain was the world’s biggest wine producer of 2013. Wine production jumped 41% last year with production reaching 50 million hectoliters or 6.7 billion bottles. France produced 42 million hectoliters and Italy produced 47 million hectoliters. Perfect weather conditions of a wet spring and a sunny summer, along with recent investments in planting and irrigation systems came together to create a bumper harvest for the country with more than 50% of the harvest coning from Castilla-La Mancha. Spain’s exports reached a record last year as well giving the fragile economy of the country an overall boost of 1%.
