In an effort to address early-stage funding gaps within timberland and natural capital markets, the U.S. Endowment for Forestry and Communities has committed $5 million as an anchor investment to Conservation Resources’ new CRSilva fund.

The CRSilva strategy is an early-stage, forest-sector venture capital vehicle targeting startups across several subsectors, including wood fiber products, forest analytics, supply-chain logistics, ecosystem service technologies, and management software.

The capital allocation aims to support commercial development across North American working forests, building on broader private- and non-profit-sector efforts to address capitalization challenges that have historically limited technology deployment in the natural resources space.

Structure and Context of the CRSilva Anchor Capital

Conservation Resources, an investment management firm specializing in real assets and natural resources, structured CRSilva to capitalize and scale emerging technologies across the forestry value chain.

“This investment fund will help support new technologies and products in the forest sector to enhance forest ecosystems, forest products markets and rural communities,” Trevor Cutsinger, Vice President of Natural Capital Solutions at the Endowment, said in a release announcing the commitment.

“Forest products are extremely diverse, with wide-ranging applications from construction materials to biochemicals and biofuels, along with packaging solutions and new technology to assist with forest management or disaster mitigation,” Cutsinger added.

“CRSilva is thrilled to have the Endowment as a partner,” Paul Young, founder and managing partner of CRSilva, said in the same release. “They bring a wealth of insight into the forest ecosystem and associated markets.”

The transaction aligns with another recent effort from the Endowment: the launch of the Forest Catalyst Network. Created alongside regional philanthropic and industry partners, the network was formed to help bridge gaps between early-stage forestry innovations and institutional capital allocators by connecting fund managers, domain experts, timberland owners, and investors.

Complementary Initiatives: The Forest Catalyst Network

Launched earlier this year, the Forest Catalyst Network addresses a persistent structural challenge within the forestry sector: the disconnect between tech-driven ideas and scalable commercial investment. While startup innovation in software, artificial intelligence, supply chain optimization, and bio-based materials has grown across adjacent sectors, early-stage forestry ventures have frequently faced longer development timelines and distinct market dynamics.

“What’s been missing in our sector is the connection between a good idea and the capital to scale it,” Cutsinger said. “The Network brings different types of capital allocators together with the best ideas and entrepreneurs.”

Designed as a collaborative platform, the Forest Catalyst Network focuses on several key operational functions across the sector:

  • Deal Flow Aggregation: Identifying technology-driven startups working on wood products, forest health monitoring, wildfire mitigation, and forest supply chains.
  • Investor Alignment: Connecting private equity, venture capital firms, family offices, and philanthropic funders interested in natural capital.
  • Technical & Market Validation: Offering sector-specific insights to help investors evaluate technology performance, market demand, and operational applicability across working forests.

While the Network functions as a broad forum for industry coordination and deal pipeline visibility, direct capital commitments like the $5 million allocation to CRSilva represent the Endowment’s balance-sheet investments into specific venture structures.

Key Elements of the Investment Deal

Core components of the $5 million commitment and its surrounding framework include:

  • Anchor Capital Deployment: The U.S. Endowment committed $5 million to Conservation Resources’ CRSilva fund to anchor private-sector investment in forest technology.
  • Target Industry Sectors: Funding will target startups focused on bio-based materials, sustainable construction products, forest carbon analytics, wildfire prevention technology, and supply chain logistics.
  • Strategic & Financial Goals: The fund strategy aims to achieve market-rate financial returns while supporting long-term forest retention, rural economic stability, and sustainable forest management practices.
  • Institutional Partnership: The transaction combines Conservation Resources’ track record in alternative asset management with the Endowment’s sector research, data, and industry network.

Looking Forward Across Forest-Sector Capital Markets

The $5 million anchor commitment to the CRSilva fund reflects an evolving approach to market-based conservation and forestry management. Alongside structural market platforms like the Forest Catalyst Network, dedicated venture capital allocations provide a pathway for moving early-stage technologies from pilot concepts to commercial deployment across North America’s working forests.
