After years of pushing corn, farmers will continue the trend of increasing soybean planting in many regions of the U.S. including on the fringes of the traditional Midwest corn growing regions. According to Farm Future’s first 2014 survey U.S. farmers are considering changes to crop rotations next year. The first survey to project new crop seedings showed 2014 soybean acreage could reach 78.75 million acres and wheat acreage could be as high as 57.76 million acres – both up 2% from this year. Kansas City July wheat futures remain at approximately $7 and soil moisture is adequate for most of the Plains region heading into seeding prompting farmers to increase wheat acreage.
