The European Commission is recalling a total of €180 million in EU Agricultural Policy funds from 15 member-states because of non-compliance with EU rules or inadequate control procedures on agricultural expenditures. Under the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) member states are responsible for paying out and checking agriculture expenditures and the commission is required to ensure that each country has made proper use of the funds. The commission carries out over 100 audit per year and has the authority to recall funds from member states if member-state controls and management are lacking and not able to guarantee the funds have been used properly. The biggest correction is €40.4 million being recovered from the UK. €39.2 million is being charged to Poland and €11.5 million to Denmark. Other countries being charged are Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Latvia, Luxembourg, Hungary, Slovenia and Finland.
