British officials are in negotiations with Chinese authorities working to establish that UK veterinary standards are correct in order to allow UK producers to export chicken feet and pig trotters to China. In 2012 China imported 231,700 tons of chicken feet with a value of £214 million ($340 million). The U.S. was a major exporter of chicken feet to China until 2010 when under charges that the U.S. was dumping poultry products onto the Chinese market and hurting domestic companies, China enacted a tariff on U.S. imports which in some cases was as high as 105.4%, effectively ending U.S. chicken exports to China. Upon being granted permission to export chicken feet to China UK producers could realize an increase in revenue of 15% (or £1.5) per bird.
