Ulupono Investing $17.5 Million in Kauai Dairy

Ulupono Initiative is creating the biggest dairy in the state of Hawaii by investing $17.5 million in a grass-fed dairy on 582 leased acres on Kauai.  The venture would double the supply of local milk.  Since 1984 most milk in Hawaii has come from the mainland.  Cloverleaf Dairy and Island Dairy are the only remaining large-scale dairies in the state, providing approximately 9% of Hawaii’s milk.  The new dairy – Hawaii Dairy Farms, will be based on a New Zealand pastoral model to help offset the volatile cost of imported feed.  The venture plans to have 1,800 dairy cows and increase production to account for 20% of the market.
