According to data from the National Livestock Quality and Health Service (Senacsa) in the first seven months of 2013 both the value and the volume of meat exports from Paraguay increased 45% over the same period a year earlier. The value of meat exports reached $839 million- up from $577 million in 2012, and the volume of exports reached 219.921 tons, up from 151.286 tons in the first seven months of 2012. The reason behind the increases is the re-entry of Paraguayan meat onto the global market (exporting mainly to Russia, Israel and Chile) after the country imposed strict quarantine and sanitary restrictions in response to two outbreaks of foot and mouth disease. Agriculture and Livestock minister Rody Godoy forecasts that meat exports from Paraguay could reach a value of $1.5 billion in 2013.
