Court Overturns EPAs Biofuels Mandate

 

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia has thrown out a federal rule on renewable fuels opining that the mandates set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) incorporating cellulosic fuel into car and truck fuel were based on wishful thinking and not on realistic estimates of what could be accomplished.  From 2010-2012 the EPA has required gradually increasing levels of cellulosic fuel incorporation into motor fuel each year currently totaling 20 million gallons.  If the mandates are not met it will be the refineries that could be fined, not the cellulosic fuel producers.  Even though production has been slow to start and is near zero, there are recent signs that the cellulosic sector is gaining momentum.
