EU Lifts Ban on Poultry Imports From India

EU Lifts Ban on Poultry Imports From India

The European Union has lifted a five-year ban on the importation of poultry meat from India however conditions remain in place.  Indian exporters will need an amended model health certificate issued by the Export Inspection Council of India.  The initial ban was put in place because of fears of the spread of bird flu but following India’s culling of millions of birds the fears have subsided.  Currently India exports various poultry products worth Rs500cr (US$84.05 million). Of this, the EU accounts for 20% – 25%.  Given the strict quality specifications, not many Indian companies will be able to take advantage of the opening of the EU market, but the opening in and of itself will aid the sector in other markets as well.  Healthy growth in Indian poultry output over the last decade has made India one of the fastest growing markets with significant potential due to a gap against global per capita consumption and favorable economic factors.
