Huon Aquaculture Expands Salmon Production on Tasmania’s North West Coast

A major expansion of sales of salmon to the Australian domestic market is behind Huon Aquaculture’s $12 million investment into expanding its seafood processing facility at Paramatta Creek in Tasmania.  Funding for the project includes $3.5 million in funding from the federal government and $1.5 million from the state government.  The company also plans to increase its farming capacity, build a new hatchery and adopt new seal-proof cages. Overall production is expected to increase to 30,000 tons per year from the current 15,000 tons per year.  Primary Industries and Water Minister Jeremy Rockliff states that the company’s expansion is in line with the country’s plan to expand the Tasmanian salmon industry to a $1 billion per year business.
