Investment Funds Staking Claim To Prairie Farmland

Half of Canada’s farmers are over the age of 55 and are looking toward retirement.  Farmland investment funds such as AgCapita Farmland Investment, Maxcrop Farm Canada, Assiniboia Capital Corporation and Bonnefield, are buying up agricultural land primarily in the prairies of Saskatchewan and Alberta; acting as landlord and leasing the land back to the farmers who operate it.  These funds have invested in more than 64,750 hectares of land or 1 in 405 hectares- but this number is growing every year and all funds except Maxcrop, which did not disclose, said that they returned approximately 20% to investors last year.
