Japan May Resume GMO-Hit U.S. Wheat Buys This Week

Japan, which imports approximately 800,000 tons of western wheat from the U.S. annually is expected to join South Korea and other large buyers of U.S. white wheat by resuming imports since halting shipments in May after GM wheat developed by Monsanto but which never entered the market was found in an Oregon wheat field.  Stricter regulations will be in place upon resumption.  Tests for the presence of genetically modified organisms will be required in both the U.S. and Japan and importers in Japan will be required to take out insurance policies covering any such incidents in the future.
