The farm secretary of Parana announced that because of heavy frosts in late July, the state which is one of the top two wheat producing states in Brazil will lose 33% of its wheat crop this year. This will bring the expected output to 1.9 million tons. Brazilian flour mills will be buying even more North American wheat this season as Brazil’s traditional supplier, Argentina, is dealing with low supply issues. Further frosts are expected to hit that will cause even further damage to the crop. The state’s current coffee crop is largely unaffected; however 62% of next season’s crop is lost. Parana is a minor supplier to Brazil’s total coffee supply at 3.5%.
