Russia to Ban Meat From Most Canadian, Mexican Suppliers

As of April 8th Russia will ban shipments from 50% of the Canadian suppliers and over 80% of the Mexican suppliers of meat over concerns of the use of the feed additive ractopamine despite thorough evidence of its safety.  In 2012 Canada was Russia’s largest meat supplier accounting for 25% of Russia’s total imports.  The February 11th Russian ban on U.S. beef, pork and turkey imports is still in effect even after findings that U.S. turkey companies that ship to Russia do not use ractopamine.  Russia will cover its meat demands with supplies from South America, mainly Brazil.
