Tax Rebate Threatening Australia’s Wine Industry

The managing director of DeBortoli, one of Australia’s largest family owned wineries believes that the Wine Equalization Tax (WET) poses a bigger threat to the industry than the expensive Australian dollar.  The WET grants small wine producers tax breaks while larger producers are exempt, which Darren DeBortoli claims is driving the price of wine down and creating market distortions.  The WET rebate is currently being reviewed by the Winemakers Federation of Australia.
