Westland Milk Eyes Infant Formula Expansion

Westland Milk of New Zealand is building upon its plan to develop its capacity as a supplier of high end dairy products and away from being a supplier of bulk ingredients.  In a step toward that plan the co-op has made a $100 million investment into the construction of an infant formula dryer and is investigating the possibility of building a plant for long-lasting milk production.  Construction of the new dryer is expected to begin in April 2013 and should be completed in August 2015.  In 2012-13 the co-op increased its milk supply, began year-round production, entered new markets, and introduced value-added products. The company set a dairy milk peak on November 17th with 3.69 million liters being collected from farmers and in 2013/14 the co-op is expected to sell 122,000 liters of milk at a value of $750 million.
