China Says Woman Died From Bird Flu New to Humans

China’s Center for Disease Control & Prevention confirmed that a 73 year old woman died from the H10N8 strain of the bird flu – a strain not previously found in humans.  This is the second instance of a new bird flu strain appearing in humans this year.  In March the H7N9 strain infected 140 people killing 45.  The outbreak was controlled after the country closed the majority of its live animal markets.  The World Health Organization (WHO) is working with Chinese authorities to discover the source of the infection and WHO spokesman Timothy O’Leary states that the organization expects that this will not be an isolated case. The woman’s health records indicate that she was in close contact with live poultry.
